Thyroid Support
Natural thyroid support: the minerals most supplements skip
Most thyroid supplements lead with Ashwagandha and skip the mineral stack your thyroid actually uses to make and convert hormones. Here is what the research says your thyroid actually needs.
By ULTALIFE Editorial · Last reviewed June 2026
Walk into any supplement aisle and look at the thyroid support category. Most formulas lead with Ashwagandha — 300mg, 500mg, sometimes 600mg of the fashionable adaptogen. Then some iodine. Maybe L-Tyrosine. And a short list of supporting herbs.
What most of them do not have is the complete mineral cofactor stack your thyroid actually uses to produce and convert hormones. And the single most important one — the mineral the body uses to convert T4 into active T3 — is missing from most thyroid formulas entirely.
What the thyroid actually needs
Thyroid function requires three distinct things working together. A formula that skips any of them is addressing a partial system.
Raw materials — Iodine is the primary building block of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. The thyroid combines iodine with L-Tyrosine to synthesize hormones. Without both, hormone production is limited regardless of how much adaptogen is in the formula.
Conversion minerals — The thyroid produces primarily T4. T4 is mostly inactive — the body must convert it to T3 to use it. That conversion depends on selenium-dependent enzymes. Without selenium, T4 builds up unused. This is the step most thyroid supplements ignore entirely.
Hormonal context — The thyroid does not operate alone. The HPA axis governs the whole hormonal system. Adaptogenic support (Ashwagandha, Schisandra) supports that axis. This is a real and useful layer — it is simply not the only layer, or even the most important one.
200mcg
The selenium dose in ULTALIFE Advanced Thyroid Support — at the top of the research range in the premium amino acid chelate form. Most thyroid supplements use 50-100mcg or skip it entirely.
Your thyroid needs selenium to convert T4 into usable T3. Most thyroid supplements do not contain a meaningful selenium dose. That is the gap most buyers never find out about.
The four layers ULTALIFE Advanced Thyroid Support covers
Layer 1
Raw Materials
Iodine 150mcg (dual source: kelp + potassium iodide) · L-Tyrosine 300mg. The two things the thyroid physically needs to synthesize hormones.
Layer 2
Conversion Minerals
Selenium 200mcg (chelate) · Zinc 8mg · Magnesium 200mg · Manganese 2mg (chelate) · Molybdenum 50mcg (chelate) · Copper 0.2mg. The complete thyroid cofactor stack.
Layer 3
Adaptogenic Support
Ashwagandha 200mg · Schisandra 240mg. HPA axis support for the hormonal system that governs thyroid function. The supporting layer, not the lead ingredient.
Layer 4
Delivery Support
Vitamin B-12 100mcg · Kelp 38mg · Bladderwrack 50mg · Cayenne 30mg. Energy, trace minerals, and circulation support.

Common questions
What is the most important mineral for thyroid function?
Selenium. The body uses selenium-dependent enzymes to convert T4 into active T3. Without adequate selenium, T4 builds up unused regardless of how much your thyroid produces. Research consistent doses are 100-200mcg. ULTALIFE Advanced Thyroid Support uses 200mcg in amino acid chelate form — the top of the research range in the most bioavailable form.
Why do most thyroid supplements lead with Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha is a recognized name that sells. It supports the HPA axis and is genuinely useful as a supporting ingredient. But it does not provide the raw materials for thyroid hormone synthesis (iodine, L-Tyrosine) or the conversion minerals that make T4 useful (selenium). A formula that leads with Ashwagandha and skips the mineral stack has the order backwards.
Can I take this with levothyroxine?
Many people do. The important consideration is iodine timing — iodine can affect levothyroxine absorption. Always bring the specific supplement label to your prescribing physician before adding any supplement to a thyroid medication routine. Do not start without that conversation. See our full guide on thyroid supplements and levothyroxine.
What is the difference between T4 and T3?
T4 is the primary hormone the thyroid produces. It is mostly inactive — a storage form. T3 is the active form your body's cells actually use. The body converts T4 to T3 using selenium-dependent enzymes. This is why selenium is the most critical mineral in any thyroid support formula.
Is ULTALIFE Advanced Thyroid Support vegan?
No. The capsules are gelatin (bovine) — not vegan. The formula also contains kelp and bladderwrack as natural iodine sources.
